An international industrial group used a large network of intranet sites for internal communication. Hyand was commissioned with the objective of creating a central platform (Universal Content Platform, UIP for short) in which all intranet pages would flow together. The new platform was to be implemented uniformly in the new rebranding design.
The individual websites were operated on different web servers, content management systems and hosts. The challenge was to secure the data and content and integrate it into a standardized, future-proof and flexible platform.
In order to make the software available to all internal customers quickly, simultaneously and securely, a very high degree of standardization and automation was required (CD/CI pipeline). A DevOps process was chosen for the implementation of the project. Thanks to the agile approach, the numerous change requirements were implemented efficiently.
Architecture:First of all, we used a cloud application stack. Different services are available depending on the cloud provider. The services we selected are based on a platform we developed ourselves, which enables rapid development of the application and integration of the cloud services. The top architecture layer is the concrete applications such as the UIP.
UIP architecture:A microservice architecture was used for the UIP application on which the websites run. This ensures the required flexibility.
Hyand mainly took care of the development of the UIP, which includes Angular frontend applications and microservices implemented with NodeJs. During the development of the platform, we further developed the Docker images for the microservices and wrote the YAML files for our applications.
The technical aspects of DevOps were used intensively in the UIP project. A completely automated CD/CI pipeline was used. Changes made by the developers were automatically built and imported into the development environment. A release was fully automatically imported into the test environment and - with approval from the specialist side - distributed to all production environments with a single click.
