Analytics platform to improve healthcare provision
The Challenge
Creating knowledge for practical application – that is the core task of the Scientific Institute of the AOK (WIdO). It offers sound expertise on all areas of statutory health insurance and focuses primarily on patient care. The WIdO has two main areas of focus: On the one hand, the research and development work carried out supports the AOK community in particular in ensuring high-quality and cost-effective healthcare. On the other hand, it focuses on research, teaching, and the further development of statutory health insurance. The AOK's integrated data, library, and analytics platform (DiAna) provides users in the AOK community with a powerful database. Analyses are based on anonymized service data from several years covering 27 million AOK policyholders, as well as a large number of medically and pharmaceutically validated regulations. This provides a flexible and high-performance analysis tool that enables AOK experts in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, contract design, and controlling to answer questions without programming knowledge—using big data and complex classification systems. Hyand successfully applied for a tender from WIdO—the R&D unit in the AOK community—and was awarded the contract because its portfolio and long-standing partnership with MicroStrategy perfectly met the customer's requirements. In addition, Hyand Solutions had proven its MicroStrategy expertise in previous projects.
Our solution
Hyand was responsible for the entire implementation of the front end using MicroStrategy in the AOK's DiAna project. A MicroStrategy Intelligence Server, a separate MicroStrategy Web Server, and MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager were installed and configured. During the course of the project, Hyand Solutions recorded the requirements and developed the architecture for the DiAna application. Based on the architecture, the data model was implemented in MicroStrategy. To set up the report library, it was necessary to develop a complex, three-level nested filter construct using various report objects (filter reports, prompts, etc.). Based on this, Hyand Solutions was able to design additional metrics, reports, and documents. In collaboration with the WiDO DWH team, Hyand Solutions was able to optimize the execution time of the reports from the library through VLDB settings and changes to the data model. Since the functionalities of MicroStrategy Web did not meet the requirements of the DiAna application, it was also necessary to make various adjustments using MicroStrategy SDK. This included, among other things, the implementation of an automatic import of several thousand report definitions from an external database. An export function was also implemented, which allows report definitions to be saved to a CSV file from MicroStrategy Web. For mass backup, further processing, and editing, a bulk export function was also implemented, which exports thousands of report definitions from MicroStrategy to a database. In addition, it was necessary to adapt the operating functions on the input side (responding to prompts) for reports in MicroStrategy Web. Finally, various display formats in MicroStrategy Web were changed to ensure better usability. Another task in the project was to train project participants. The main topics here were administration, the use of report services, and project design. Building on the positive experiences of the user community with DiAnaclassic, further applications were developed using an agile approach, such as DiAnalight—a focused version of DiAna that invites interactive exploration of AOK performance data—and DiAnamobile, a mobile app that allows such analyses on iOS devices. The app runs "Blackberry secured" and uses all modern security standards necessary for the use of sensitive data.
The result
The customer was provided with a future-proof application (GIS analyses, mobile, self-service, etc.) on the basis of which further development for new functionalities/analyses can be built (e.g. time series, map display, predictive analysis, R integration, etc.).
