Lünendonk® Study 2024: Why application modernization and cloud transformation are strategically crucial now

September 1, 2024

The digital transformation is progressing at a rapid pace - and with it, the demands on IT landscapes in companies are increasing. Modern applications, scalable infrastructures and a consistent focus on business goals are no longer optional projects, but a prerequisite for sustainable competitiveness.

As an international software company with a focus on innovative technologies, we observe on a daily basis how profoundly requirements for IT environments are changing. The current Lünendonk® Study 2024 "Application Modernization and Cloud Transformation" takes a comprehensive look at this change - and provides valuable insights for IT decision-makers and business leaders alike.

Complexity meets pressure to innovate

According to the study, 72% of the companies surveyed stated that they intend to invest significantly in their cloud transformation in the coming years. At the same time, 68% see the complexity of existing application landscapes as the biggest challenge when it comes to modernization.

A key area of tension: while IT departments often drive change, budget responsibility lies with the management or CFO - which often leads to delays. According to the study, only 13% of companies have a technology stack that fully meets current requirements.

Cloud, AI and sustainability - modernization is picking up speed

In addition to traditional drivers such as performance, scalability and efficiency, topics such as artificial intelligence and sustainability are increasingly coming into focus. For example, 54% of companies expect AI to facilitate the modernization of their IT landscapes. At the same time, many see cloud use as an opportunity to respond to the shortage of skilled workers - through automation, standardization and modern development processes.

The study also shows that the path does not necessarily lead to a completely cloud-native future. Rather, many companies are focusing on hybrid scenarios that integrate existing legacy systems in a targeted manner - and thus create a balance between innovative strength and stability.

What does this mean for your company?

For tech-savvy B2B companies, there is a clear call to action: now is the time to strategically scrutinize your own application architecture and make targeted investments in modernization initiatives. The Lünendonk® study provides a sound database and strategic insights - from typical obstacles to best practices from the field.

We recommend reading it to all IT managers who deal with topics such as legacy replacement, cloud-native architectures, DevOps transformation or the integration of AI.
