The client is a leading international retail company with around 80,000 employees. It operates stores in several European countries.
IT monitoring provides companies with an up-to-date overview of their own IT systems so that they can react to potential faults at an early stage. The customer previously used the Icinga monitoring system. Hyand was commissioned to conduct a feasibility study for an upgrade of the existing system. It was determined that the benefits and costs of an upgrade were not in good proportion. The recommendation was therefore to carry out a new installation including an adaptation of the operating system.
The consultants recommended the CheckMK monitoring system to the client, as it provided greater added value compared to the previous system, such as integrated plugins, an easy-to-use graphical interface and ready-made interfaces to cloud services. The advantages of the new system were presented in a proof of concept.
Following the creation of a rollout concept, CheckMK was implemented at the customer's premises. For the monitoring system, 12,000 services were distributed to the target systems with the help of distribution software and manual deployment by the consultants. Due to the high number of monitored services (over 400,000, previously approx. 30,000), a new action profile was created and the customer decided to further expand the monitoring system. Nevertheless, the resources required remain low: a single CheckMK server monitors hundreds of thousands of services. The customer received a comprehensive overview of all relevant information on services, applications, networks, utilization, bandwidth, hardware and connected components in real time, automated, uncomplicated and clearly arranged on flexibly adaptable dashboards.
At the end of 2020, almost one million metrics were being monitored. In the next step, the monitoring was linked to a ticket system so that administrators receive a corresponding, detailed message in the form of a ticket when events occur and can resolve potential problems directly.
At the end of 2021, more than 3,000,000 services were visible in the monitoring system due to the connection of new technical devices or services from the cloud. The entire system has now been distributed to over 70 servers. This makes the installation one of the largest in the world. Further connections to the company's more than 5,000 stores are already planned.
Throughout all operational areas, dashboards and automatic reports have provided the customer with comprehensive IT visibility, thereby significantly improving the stability of the systems. Hyand's Managed Services division has taken over the operation of the environment, including 24/7 support, and continues to be available to the customer's specialist departments for special presentations and connections.
