Real-time data platform in the cloud enables new service offerings
The Challenge
Market changes and growing customer needs often place increasing demands on data platforms. Existing and historically grown on-premise platforms quickly reach their limits and have disadvantages in terms of flexibility, scalability, and performance. However, the timely and comprehensive evaluation of data is relevant to companies' competitiveness – and enables new services for end customers. The existing data platform no longer met the customer's requirements, especially with regard to future use cases and customer requirements. Therefore, the company decided, together with Hyand, to replace the legacy system by building a modern, flexible, and scalable fast data analytics platform in the cloud. The goal was to provide and analyze continuous industrial process data and display it visually in real-time dashboards. In order not to impact ongoing business processes, the platform had to be replaced in the shortest possible time.
Our solution
At the start of the project, Hyand conducted a comprehensive comparison of relevant platform providers. Workshops were held with key stakeholders to define the individual requirements for the project. Together, they decided on a combined use of Microsoft Azure and Cloudera Data Platform as the most sustainable and suitable solution. By setting up a joint development team, early and ongoing knowledge building at the customer's site was ensured. In the further course of the project, the cloud infrastructure was set up and the data pipeline of the use case was implemented as a minimum viable product in order to test the suitability of the tools and services proposed by the providers (in this case, Microsoft and Cloudera) for the specific customer requirements. The MVP was then expanded to production readiness and successfully put into operation.
The result
Thanks to close and goal-oriented collaboration, the use of agile methods such as Scrum and extensive testing, a modern data platform in the cloud, including a real-time dashboard, was set up within the specified eight months. The company is now in a position to roll out structurally identical environments in an automated and reproducible manner. Compared to the previous on-premise architecture, the management and scaling of the systems has been significantly simplified or made possible in the first place.
